Book Review – Devoted

Devoted – Harlow James
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Devoted is the fifth and final book in the Emerson Falls series and I think it’s my favourite. Harlow has outdone herself with Jess and Brooks’ story, it was so moving and emotional in the best way.

Brooks has moved back to Emerson Falls because of his mother’s breast cancer diagnosis. As a doctor himself, he knows how difficult the process of fighting cancer is, and he wants to be there for his mum. He gets a job in the ER at the hospital and meets Jess, an ER nurse, who he has instant chemistry with. Both are a bit reluctant to pursue anything more, Brooks because of his mother and Jess because she believes she is cursed when it comes to love. However, fate steps in when they are thrown together at a speed dating event, and they start dating after sparks fly and they see how perfect a match they are.

Their relationship progresses fast, but Brooks is keeping his mother’s cancer a secret from Jess, to avoid pity and because he’s using her as an escape from that scary unknown part of his life. Jess is suspicious at first, but when the truth comes out, it seems they have even more in common than they first thought. But when Jess finds out some life changing news herself, will they get through it together?

This book was incredible, hands down the best one in the series. It took me a while to get into it, but once Brooks and Jess were together, I was so invested. Brooks was so scared about what could happen to his mum, at first, he wanted to keep Jess out of that side of his world so he had a place he could forget about it. He was in denial, but when he opened up to her about his fears, she became a safe place for him. I loved how he didn’t bottle up his emotions, he cried and let it out, which was so refreshing from a hero in a romance book.

Jess’ belief in being cursed was a way for her to keep men at arm’s length, especially after her own history. But Brooks broke down that barrier, and the curse, and proved that he loved her completely. Everything she did, she did with Brooks in mind, and I cried so hard when he found everything out, it was heart-breaking but also full of hope too. Jess was so strong, nothing was going to stop her once she set her mind to something and I loved her whole personality, she was great. As a couple, they weren’t necessarily my favourite from this series, but with the plot and the emotions, Jess and Brooks have a piece of my heart.

It was so great to revisit Emerson Falls one last time and catch up with the previous couples, it was like coming home to old friends. Harlow’s writing has a way of doing that, it transports you into the book and you feel like a part of the group. I will miss this world and group a lot, each of their stories will stay with me for a long time. Harlow’s small-town romances are on my list of all-time favourites, I will be re-reading them time and time again.

Overall, Devoted is the perfect conclusion to the Emerson Fall series. I highly recommend each and every one of these books, they are so worth reading. They are all so different but the link between them is so strong. Devoted is full of emotion, heartache and hope. It’s about learning to lean and trust another, because although it is possible to face struggles on your own, with the support of those you love, you can be stronger to fight.

Thank you so much to Harlow for the copy of Devoted, and also for the copies of the previous four books in this series too. I have loved them all, and I cannot wait for whatever’s next. One phone call. One move. One cancer diagnosis that flipped my world upside down, pulling me back to the town of Emerson Falls in a flash.
But I never counted on one woman to alter my plans when I came home. Jessalyn Harris took me by surprise with her feisty attitude, tiny stature, and bold personality. It probably didn’t help that we worked together in the Emergency Room at the hospital either. And the more I got to know her, study her, crave her, the more she became a light in the dark world my mother’s cancer cast over me.
Of course, there can’t be love without some obstacles in the way—and I am devoted to standing by Jess’s side through it all.
If only she would just let me in completely.

Jess
I’ve decided I’m cursed because ever since nursing school I’ve had shitty luck in love. I’m convinced that one loss in my life caused a cosmic shift that doomed me to be alone forever, until I met Brooks Bennet.
Being a skeptic and afraid of letting him in, I fight the attraction I feel for him, but he doesn’t accept it. He pushes me and breaks down my walls, leaving me hopeful for once that I finally found the man I’m meant to be with.
But it seems the universe doesn’t want to let me keep him, and I’m devoted to preventing him from experiencing another loss in his life—like the one that altered mine.

*Trigger Warnings: Cancer diagnosis
